With this mass of responses we crunched the numbers to reveal which universities funnel the most trainees into the market – and what segment of the market. EDITORIAL This survey gives the real story on entry requirements. It doesn’t measure quality. Oxbridge grads make up a quarter of London trainees and a fifth of all trainees. The London universities – LSE, UCL and King's – continued to perform well here, while Nottingham lost the dominance it maintained in the other London categories. These universities offer competitive law courses and it’s a known fact that many law firms favour graduates from these universities when recruiting for training contracts and vacation schemes .

And yet the Russell Group was never intended to be a singular marker of university excellence, even though its current 24 members undoubtedly include many of the UK’s elite universities. Here are the 55 universities in the UK and the Republic of Ireland which came up in our sample outside of our top 30, in alphabetical order: Together, trainees from these universities represented 3.1% of the sample. No surprises here. While that's a small portion of the overall number of interviewees, the point is that graduates from these universities were still able to get training contracts. We also found that London attracted the highest proportion of overseas graduates. The range of universities feeding the market grew by 14% in three years.
