Filmed on a sound stage, the city is constantly bathed in a sea of night and fog, making the film feel like a companion piece to some of the best black and white Gothic horrors of the era. Just sayin’. She of course stays and unpleasant things happen as the mysteries of Whitewood are revealed in consistently creepy fashion. 'Horror Hotel' (sadly the copy I bought has this tacky title, which is the only thing I can fault about it) really surprised me at just how creepy and atmospheric it was. The City Of The Dead is both creepy and charming - it's the kind of gently spooky black and white horror that demands a rainy Sunday afternoon and a mug of hot chocolate.
